Overtaking & Position on the Road at a glance

Here you learn when you may overtake and where to position yourself before turning. Each part has its own explanation page.

  • No-overtaking signs: at sign F1 you may not overtake a motor vehicle, but you may overtake a bicycle, moped or light moped. Sign F3 only applies to lorries.
  • Overtaking rules: you overtake on the left. Overtaking on the right is only allowed in five cases: in a jam, on a roundabout, at block markings, past a tram and past a vehicle turning left.
  • Overtaking at a junction, bend or zebra crossing: you may never overtake just before or on a zebra crossing. At a junction or bend you only overtake if you can see everything clearly.
  • Overtaking across a solid line: not allowed. With two lines side by side, the line on your side counts. With traffic in both directions it costs €320 in 2026.
  • Getting in lane before turning: for a right turn you keep as far right as possible. For a left turn you move close to the centre of the road, or fully left if no oncoming traffic is possible.
  • Roundabouts: just before and on a roundabout you may overtake on the right and you do not have to keep right. When leaving, you always indicate right.

More about the lines themselves is in solid lines and broken lines. Overtaking on the motorway is covered in overtaking on the right on the motorway.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common questions about Overtaking & Position on the Road.

May you overtake a tractor where there is a no-overtaking ban?

No, a tractor is a motor vehicle. A supplementary plate permitting overtaking tractors can create an exception for overtaking that tractor. It does not generally permit the tractor to overtake you. Even with that plate, markings, visibility and safety must allow the manoeuvre.

What does the no-overtaking sign (F1) mean?

F1 prohibits motor vehicles from overtaking one another. You may not overtake a motorcycle or tractor either. Article 2a also applies the motor-vehicle rules to a microcar. F1 alone does not prohibit overtaking, for example, a cyclist, moped rider or disabled vehicle; other rules and safety may still prevent it. F2 ends this prohibition.

When may you overtake on the right?

For car drivers there are five usual situations: traffic queues, just before or on a roundabout, to the right of block markings past traffic on their left, a tram, and a vehicle ahead positioned left and indicating left. The route must always be safe and permitted. An open rush-hour lane or a slow driver staying left gives no extra exception.

May you overtake at a junction?

There is no general overtaking prohibition at every junction. Overtaking there is often unsafe because the vehicle ahead hides crossing traffic and pedestrians. Do not overtake with insufficient visibility or space, and follow priority rules, signs and markings. Just before or on a zebra crossing, an express overtaking prohibition does apply.

May you position on a cycle lane before turning?

You may use a cycle lane with a broken boundary line provided you do not hinder cyclists or other authorised users. You do not have to. Check mirrors and your blind spot first. You may not use a solid-line cycle lane in a car. Do not confuse a cycle lane on the carriageway with a separate cycle path.

Which lane should you choose when turning at a junction with multiple lanes (CBR)?

Read the arrows and signs and choose the rightmost lane permitting your direction in good time. Going straight does not automatically mean using the middle lane. Just before and on roundabouts, exceptions to keeping right apply; follow the lane guidance there. When changing lanes, let all other traffic go first and indicate.
