Practise driver assistance systems

Question 1

You drive with ACC active and it recognises a slower vehicle ahead. What support would you normally expect?

Accepted Answer

The system reduces speed to support the selected following gap

Answer

It warns you that you are getting too close, but keeps driving just as fast

Answer

It moves to the left by itself to overtake the car

Question 2

You are driving with ACC on and you come up to a traffic jam that is standing still. What do you have to take into account?

Accepted Answer

The system sometimes sees stopped traffic late, or not at all

Answer

The system always brakes in time and brings the car to a safe stop

Answer

The system turns on your hazard lights by itself as soon as it sees the jam

Question 3

Your car has blind spot detection (BSD). What do you do when you change lanes?

Accepted Answer

You still check your mirror and look over your shoulder

Answer

You rely completely on the light in your mirror

Answer

You only look over your shoulder if the light is broken

Question 4

What is automatic emergency braking (AEB) for?

Accepted Answer

To brake automatically for an imminent collision and avoid or mitigate it

Answer

To take over the braking from you in busy traffic

Answer

To make your braking distance shorter every time you brake

Question 5

How does speed assist (ISA) know which speed limit applies?

Accepted Answer

Through traffic-sign recognition, map data or a combination

Answer

By measuring only engine speed

Answer

By measuring only tyre pressure

Question 6

What is the biggest benefit of ABS when you make an emergency stop?

Accepted Answer

ABS limits prolonged wheel locking, generally preserving steering control

Answer

Your braking distance gets much shorter on every road

Answer

Your tyres get more grip than they normally have

Question 7

Your car is about to skid in a bend. Which system brakes individual wheels?

Accepted Answer

ESP (electronic stability programme)

Answer

ISA (speed assist)

Answer

ACC (adaptive cruise control)

Question 8

When may an active lane keeping assistant (LKA) provide a steering correction?

Accepted Answer

When it recognises an unintended departure from the lane

Answer

As soon as you switch on your indicator

Answer

Only when you drive faster than 130 km/h

Question 9

While parking, the sensors give a continuous tone. What do you do?

Accepted Answer

Stop and check the space yourself

Answer

Continue because the car is ready to park automatically

Answer

Ignore the tone because it always comes from dirt

Question 10

What do mud or snow do to the parking sensors in your bumper?

Accepted Answer

The system can drop out or give a false alarm: beeping all the time, or seeing nothing

Answer

Nothing, the sensors simply measure straight through the dirt

Answer

The car measures the distance with GPS instead
