Priority between drivers
Priority determines who may drive first, especially at intersections. There are three types of intersections:
- With traffic lights: green means go, red means stop.
- With priority signs: shark teeth and stop signs indicate who must yield.
- Equal intersections: no signs or markings, follow the standard rules.
Standard rules:
- Yield to drivers coming from the right.
- Straight traffic has priority over turning traffic on the same road.
- The short turn has priority over the long turn.
Priority for pedestrians
Pedestrians are vulnerable and often have priority at zebra crossings. Without a zebra crossing, standard rules for drivers apply; pedestrians are not drivers.
Mnemonic: See the pedestrian's belly or back? Slow down. See the pedestrian from the side? Speed up.
People with walkers, crutches, or white canes always deserve priority and help.
Handling special road users
Always follow instructions from emergency vehicles, military convoys, and traffic controllers. They have priority to ensure safety and traffic flow.
