Driver's License and Validity
After passing your theory and practical exams, you can apply for a driver's license. It is valid for a maximum of 10 years and must be renewed with a new photo. You are a beginner driver for the first 5 years. Always carry your original license and registration card, as copies are not valid.
Insurance and Accident Form
Before driving, your car must be insured. There are two main types: liability insurance (covers damage to others) and all-risk insurance (also covers your own damage). Always fill in an accident form after a collision to arrange compensation.
Vehicle Categories and Rules
With a category B license, you may drive cars, mopeds with blue plates (max 25 km/h, bike path), and mopeds with yellow plates (max 45 km/h, helmet required). Speed-pedelecs are classified as mopeds. Motorcyclists need a special license and must always wear a helmet.
Seatbelts, Seats and Safety
Wearing a three-point seatbelt is mandatory for all occupants. The belt must be worn tightly across the chest. Child seats are required for children under 1.35 meters and must fit properly. Headrests should be adjusted to prevent neck injuries in a collision.
