Priority rules for trams

Priority rules for trams: at an equal junction the tram always has priority. At a priority junction the tram follows the signs.

A tram almost always has priority. At an equal junction it also goes first from the left, and a turning tram goes before traffic going straight on. But a tram waits at give-way markings, a stop sign, a pedestrian on a zebra crossing and a priority vehicle.

Does a tram always have priority?

At an equal junction the tram goes first. It does not matter whether it comes from the left or the right.

No, but almost always. A tram cannot swerve, so it gets extra priority. But it must also follow signs, give-way markings, traffic lights and instructions.

A memory aid from the lesson: the tram is only afraid of sharks and zebras. That means give-way markings (haaientanden, "shark teeth") and pedestrians on a zebra crossing. Further down you read the other exceptions.

Tram priority rules: when does a tram have right of way?

In short: the tram goes first. It waits at shark teeth (or a stop sign) and for pedestrians on a zebra crossing. Apart from that, like everyone else, it waits for a priority vehicle, at its own red tram light and when a traffic controller says stop.

In two places a tram gets more priority than a normal driver:

1. Equal junction: also from the left

Normally traffic from the right goes first. At an equal junction a tram always goes first, even when it comes from the left. So you wait, even if you come from the tram’s right.

2. A turning tram goes before traffic going straight on

The tram and the learner car drive on the same priority road. The tram turns, the learner car goes straight on. Still, the tram goes first.

Normally going straight on goes before turning. That rule does not apply to a tram. If a tram turns on your road, it still goes first, even when you go straight on. That also applies when you are both on a priority road.

Here the tram goes first. Then the cyclists going straight on, and last the turning car.
Here the tram goes first. Then the cyclists going straight on, and last the turning car.

After that, you solve the rest with the normal rules. A turning car still lets cyclists going straight on go first. Read more about those rules in the basic priority rules.

When does a tram not have priority?

In these situations the tram waits:

PictureSituationWhat applies?
Tram approaching give-way markingsThe tram has give-way markings, sign B6 or a stop signThe tram gives way to traffic on the crossing road.
Pedestrian on a zebra crossing in front of the tramA pedestrian crosses on the zebra crossingThe tram stops and lets the pedestrian go.
Priority vehicle with blue lights and sirenA priority vehicle approachesThe tram also lets a vehicle with blue lights and a siren go first.
Traffic controller at a junctionA traffic controller or traffic light says stopThe tram also follows the controller and its own tram light.

Does the tram come from a side road with give-way markings while you are on the priority road? Then the tram waits for you. So always check first who has the signs and markings.

Does a tram have to stop at a zebra crossing?

Someone is crossing on the zebra crossing. The tram stops.
Someone is crossing on the zebra crossing. The tram stops.

Yes. Is a pedestrian crossing on the zebra crossing, or clearly about to cross? Then the tram stops, just like you. If there are traffic lights at the crossing, the tram follows its own tram light.

Who has priority, a tram or a pedestrian on a zebra crossing? The pedestrian. Read the rules for pedestrians in pedestrians and priority.

Is a tram a motor vehicle or a priority vehicle?

A tram runs on rails. That is why it is not a motor vehicle.
A tram runs on rails. That is why it is not a motor vehicle.

Neither. A tram is not a motor vehicle: Dutch law only calls vehicles that do not run on rails a motor vehicle. The tram driver is a driver, though. That is why the priority rules also apply to him.

A tram is not a priority vehicle either. That is only an emergency vehicle with blue lights and a siren. The tram does have its own priority rules, as you read above. Read more in priority vehicles.

Traffic rules for trams and cars: stops, overtaking and rails

At a tram stop

A shows a tram line, B a tram stop. At a stop, also watch out for passengers.
A shows a tram line, B a tram stop. At a stop, also watch out for passengers.

Is a tram standing still with people getting on or off? If you pass on the side where they get off, let them get on and off first. Also watch for people crossing in front of or behind the tram.

May you overtake a tram on the right?

You may overtake a tram on the right. Only do it when there is enough room and no passengers are getting on.
You may overtake a tram on the right. Only do it when there is enough room and no passengers are getting on.

Yes. You may overtake a tram on the right. That is an exception to the rule that you overtake on the left. You do not have to: if there is too little room, you wait. All exceptions are in overtaking on the right.

Answer options

Answers and explanations for the example questions

  1. Question 1: Do you have to give way to the tram?

    Correct answer: Yes

Trams have priority. They only stop if there are shark teeth or pedestrians on a crosswalk.

  2. Question 2: Do you have to give way to the tram?

    Correct answer: Yes

Trams almost always have priority, except at crosswalks or shark teeth.

  3. Question 3: Do you have to give way to the tram?

    Correct answer: No

In this situation, there are give way triangles for the tram. Therefore, the tram must stop. You do not have to let the tram go ahead. Trams only stop for give way triangles and pedestrians at a crosswalk.

  4. Question 4: May the tram continue?

    Correct answer: No

Trams must stop for pedestrians at a crosswalk. If pedestrians are crossing, the tram must wait. This is the exception for trams 🚶.

  5. Question 5: What is the correct order of priority at this intersection?

    Correct answer: Order on the image: 1 → 2 → 3

Trams basically always have priority, except when there are shark teeth (yield lines) or for pedestrians on a zebra crossing. The tram must therefore stop for the pedestrian at the pedestrian crossing. The pedestrian goes first because of this. The tram then has priority over the learner car. So the order is: pedestrian, tram, learner car 🚋.

  6. Question 6: What is the correct order of priority at this intersection?

    Correct answer: Order on the image: 1 → 2 → 3

A tram basically has priority over everyone, but must stop at shark teeth (yield lines) and for pedestrians on a zebra crossing. The tram has shark teeth here, so it goes last. Then we look at the other drivers: the cyclist is going straight and the learner car is turning. On the same road the rule is: straight on goes before turning traffic. So the order is: cyclist, learner car, tram 🚲.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to questions that often come up on this subject.

Does a tram always have priority?

No. At an equal junction a tram has special priority over other drivers, even from the left. A turning tram also has an exception to ordinary same-road turning rules. Applicable give-way markings, priority signs, tram signals and authorised instructions still apply. A tram must also respect the ordinary zebra-crossing duty and the protection of people with a white cane with red bands or difficulty walking.

Does a turning tram go first when you go straight on?

When you and the tram travel on the same road, the turning tram has an exception to the ordinary straight-ahead rule. This can also apply when both follow the same priority road. A tram arriving from a subordinate side road with B6, B7 or give-way markings is different: those signs still apply. Traffic signals and authorised instructions also remain binding.
