Special manoeuvres

Special manoeuvres: who must wait when merging, turning around, reversing, getting out and driving away.

During a special manoeuvre, you must always let other traffic go first. Think of reversing, merging, turning around, changing lanes and pulling away.

For the CBR exam, the main question is always: are you the one doing the manoeuvre? Then you may not block or startle anyone.

What are special manoeuvres in Dutch traffic?

Special manoeuvres are actions where you cross normal traffic or may get in its way. Are you doing one? Then you let all other traffic go first, including pedestrians and cyclists. These are the special manoeuvres:

When reversing, you also let a pedestrian pass.

Driving out of an exit or into a driveway

Traffic already on the exit lane goes first.

Traffic in the other lane goes first.
Changing lanes
Traffic in the other lane goes first.

Memory aid: whoever does something special waits. That applies everywhere, also in a car park.

Is someone else doing the manoeuvre? Then they must let you go first. But never assume the other driver will really wait. Avoiding a crash always comes first.

You may not block anyone when getting in or out or opening a door either. Read about it in getting in and out.

Special manoeuvres on the practical driving test

On the practical driving test, exercises such as parking and turning around are called special manoeuvres (bijzondere verrichtingen). That is something else. For the theory exam it is about the priority rule above.

Merging onto and leaving the motorway

Merging is also a special manoeuvre: traffic on the main carriageway goes first. Read how to merge and exit on the motorway in merging and exiting.

Exception: a bus leaving a stop

Does a bus inside a built-up area signal that it wants to pull away from a stop? Then you give it the chance. Read more in large vehicles.

Special manoeuvres by car: reversing, pulling away and turning around

Reversing

Reversing is allowed on a normal road, if you do not block anyone. It is never allowed on a motorway or autoweg. Look all around, also over your shoulder, and drive at walking pace. Is someone passing? Then stop and let them go first.

Reversing is only allowed if you do not block anyone, including pedestrians.

Pulling away

Want to pull away from a parking bay or the kerb? Then wait until you will not block anyone. Use your indicator. Indicating does not give you priority.

Before you pull out of the bay, wait for the pedestrian. Indicating does not give you priority.

Another car reverses

Is another car reversing out of a bay? Then that driver must let you go first. Stay alert and brake if needed.

The other car is reversing out of a bay. That driver lets you go first. Stay ready to brake.

Turning around

  • On a normal road you may turn around if signs and lines allow it, you have enough view and space, and you let all other traffic go first.
  • Is there a solid line? Then you may not turn around.
  • On an autoweg and a motorway turning around is never allowed. Traffic approaches at high speed there.
  • In a one-way street turning around is not allowed, because you would drive against the traffic.

This sign means: keep to the right of the traffic island. On its own it is not a ban on turning around.

Missed your exit on the motorway? Drive on to the next exit. Do not reverse, do not turn around and do not drive back along the hard shoulder.

After a missed exit you drive on. The hard shoulder is not a route back to the exit.

Answer options

Answers and explanations for the example questions

  1. Question 1: The truck wants to leave. Should you let the truck go first?

    Correct answer: No

No, you do not have to let the truck go first. The truck wants to leave (a special maneuver) and therefore must give you priority. 🚛

  2. Question 2: You want to turn left. What do you do?

Correct answer: Stop and let the truck go first

You choose to stop and let the truck go first. Although you may have the right of way, the truck is already in the maneuver and cannot easily back. Here, social and insightful driving behavior is required. 🤝

  3. Question 3: Can you expect the car in front of you to reverse?

    Correct answer: Yes

A white light at the back of the car means it is in reverse gear, so the car can go backwards. White light warns of reversing vehicle 🔙

  4. Question 4: Who should you give way to when turning?

    Correct answer: All road users

Turning is a special maneuver. Therefore, you must give way to all road users, including pedestrians. Other special maneuvers include driving off, reversing, and parking. 🔄

  5. Question 5: Who should you yield to when pulling away?

    Correct answer: All road users

Pulling away is a special maneuver. You must yield to all road users, including pedestrians. 🚗

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to questions that often come up on this subject.

May you reverse on the motorway?

No. On an autosnelweg and an autoweg you may not reverse or turn around, not even if you have missed an exit. You drive on to the next exit.

Do you have to let a bus pulling away from a stop go first?

Inside the built-up area you do: if a bus indicates that it wants to pull away from a stop, you let it go first. Outside the built-up area you do not, and neither when a coach comes out of a parking bay.
