- Maximum speed shown on an electronic signalling sign.
A3 displays a compulsory maximum speed on an electronic signal board. A number above the road is not merely advice. When fixed signs and electronic signal boards show different maximum speeds, the lowest indicated maximum applies.
What to do at this sign
Look overhead in good time and reduce speed smoothly before reaching the restriction. Following drivers may notice the change later: keep sufficient space and avoid unnecessary sharp braking. The displayed number remains a maximum even when the road appears clear.
Example on the road
A fixed sign shows 100 km/h but an overhead board shows 70. You cannot continue at 100. Equally, an electronic display showing 100 does not permit you to exceed a fixed limit of 80.
Other conditions to check
A lower legal limit for your vehicle still applies. An unlit display does not itself specify a new speed: assess the other signs, the road type and your vehicle. Also follow lane-control signals such as a red cross.
How to recognise the sign
An electronic signal board; the displayed image determines its instruction.
Difference from A4 — Recommended speed
A3 specifies a maximum; A4 recommends a speed. An electronic maximum does not become advice simply because it is displayed digitally.
A4 — Recommended speedLegal basis
