End of maximum speed 50 km/h.

A2 ends the local maximum speed crossed out on the sign. It does not specify a new speed. After the sign, determine the permitted speed from your vehicle, the road type and other traffic signs, including any applicable zone.

What to do at this sign

Before accelerating, establish whether you are inside or outside a built-up area and whether this is a motor road or motorway. A lower vehicle limit, for example when towing, remains applicable. Another speed sign or an electronic display may also restrict your speed.

Example on the road

When a 50 km/h restriction ends on an ordinary road outside a built-up area, the general 80 km/h limit may apply to an ordinary car again. That follows from the rule for that road, not from a new number imposed by A2.

Other conditions to check

The sign ends the indicated local speed restriction only. It does not end an overtaking ban, parking restriction or speed recommendation. You must still be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear.

How to recognise the sign

A light circular sign with black diagonal lines ending an indicated restriction.

Difference from A5 — End of recommended speed

A2 concerns a compulsory maximum speed; A5 ends a recommended speed. Their meanings are different.

Frequently asked questions

Can I always drive at 80 km/h after A2?
No. A different limit may apply in a built-up area, on another road type or to your vehicle category.
Does A2 remove my vehicle-specific limit?
No. It ends the local restriction, not the general rules for your vehicle.
