Part 2 of 5 in Speeds

Maximum speed with a trailer

Maximum speed with a trailer: never faster than 90 km/h, 80 outside built-up areas, 50 inside. And why a 100 sign does not apply to you then.

With a trailer you may never drive faster than 90 km/h, even if a sign or the time of day allows more. Outside a built-up area it is 80 km/h, inside a built-up area 50 km/h. The limit is lower because a trailer makes you longer and heavier. You then need more room to stop.

This is how fast you may drive with a car and a trailer on each type of road, when there is no lower sign:

With a trailer with a maximum authorised mass up to and including 3500 kg you never drive faster than 90 km/h, even where you may do 100 or 130 without one.

If a sign shows a lower speed, such as 70 km/h or a 30 zone, that sign applies to you as well.

Maximum speed with a trailer based on weight

The trailer’s maximum authorised mass determines the vehicle limit: up to and including 3500 kg, at most 90; above that, at most 80 km/h. A lower road limit still applies.
The trailer’s maximum authorised mass determines the vehicle limit: up to and including 3500 kg, at most 90; above that, at most 80 km/h. A lower road limit still applies.

What counts for your speed is the trailer's maximum authorised mass. That is how heavy it may be including its load. You find it in the registration document. What is in it today does not count.

  • Up to and including 3500 kg: at most 90 km/h, behind a car, van or motorcycle. That applies with licence B and with BE. A heavier licence does not give you a higher speed.
  • More than 3500 kg: at most 80 km/h.

Both limits are in RVV 1990 article 22. In the CBR exam for licence B it is almost always about 90 km/h.

How fast may you drive with a 750 kg trailer?

With a trailer of 750 kg or lighter you may also drive at most 90 km/h. The 750 kg limit decides which licence and which number plate you need, not how fast you may go. Braked or unbraked does not matter either: with a braked trailer 90 km/h is also your limit.

How fast may you drive with a caravan?

A caravan or folding trailer is also a trailer. So you may drive at most 90 km/h with it on the autoweg and the motorway. Outside a built-up area it is 80 km/h, inside a built-up area 50 km/h. Other countries have other rules. This page is about the Netherlands.

Sign or trailer limit: which comes first?

The sign permits 100, but this trailer limits the car to 90 km/h. The lowest applicable limit applies.
The sign permits 100, but this trailer limits the car to 90 km/h. The lowest applicable limit applies.

Always the lowest of the two (RVV 1990 article 63b). May you drive 100 km/h with a trailer? No, not even when a sign shows 100. If the sign shows a speed lower than 90, you follow the sign.

  • Sign or matrix sign 100 on the motorway: you drive 90.
  • Motorway at 22:00, where you could do 130 without a trailer: you drive 90.
  • Sign 70: you drive 70.
  • Matrix sign 50 above your lane: you drive 50.

How the CBR asks it

Car with a trailer on the motorway under matrix signs showing 50
Matrix sign 50 above your lane? Then you drive 50, also with a trailer. The lowest speed applies.

For a question with a trailer, go through three steps:

  1. Are you really towing a trailer? A bike carrier on the car is not a trailer. It has no separate trailer limit. Do follow the manufacturer's speed advice.
  2. Which road are you on? Inside a built-up area 50, outside a built-up area 80, on the autoweg and the motorway 90.
  3. Is there a lower sign? Then you follow that sign. You always choose the lowest speed.

Watch the time in the question. In the evening you can often drive 130 on the motorway without a trailer, but with a trailer it stays 90.

Remember for your CBR exam: with a trailer you never drive faster than 90 km/h. You do not need to remember the trailer's maximum weight for the speed questions in your theory exam.

CBR traps in trailer questions

These are the three most common mistakes:

Car with a trailer passing the end of built-up area sign

❌ Wrong: always choosing 90 km/h with a trailer.
✅ Right: first check where you are driving. Outside a built-up area it is 80, inside a built-up area 50.

Car with a trailer on the motorway in the evening, passing a 100 sign with 6-19h

❌ Wrong: following the 100 sign or the 130 that applies in the evening.
✅ Right: with a trailer it stays 90 on the motorway, by day and in the evening.

Car with a bike carrier on a road with a green line

❌ Wrong: treating a bike carrier as a trailer.
✅ Right: a bike carrier is not a trailer. On this road you may simply drive 100.

Licence, weight and number plate of a trailer are explained under which licence you need for a trailer. Load and coupling are under rules for a trailer. Everything about trailers is under trailers and bike carriers.

Question 1 of 6

It is 23:00, what is your maximum allowed speed here?

Answers and explanations for the example questions

  1. Question 1: It is 23:00, what is your maximum allowed speed here?

Correct answer: Correct value: 90 KM/H

You are driving with a trailer, therefore your maximum allowed speed is 90 km/h, you are not allowed to drive 130 km/h 🚗

  2. Question 2: Are you allowed to drive 100 km/h here?

    Correct answer: No

You are driving with a trailer. You may drive a maximum of 90 km/h and not 100 km/h. 🛞

  3. Question 3: What is your maximum allowed speed here?

Correct answer: Correct value: 90 KM/H

You are driving with a trailer. On a road with a green stripe, you are normally allowed 100 km/h, but with a trailer, that is 90 km/h. So take into account the limitations of your vehicle. 🏁

  4. Question 4: What is your maximum allowed speed here?

Correct answer: Correct value: 80 KM/H

With a trailer, you are usually allowed 90 km/h, but you are outside the built-up area where 80 km/h applies.\nAlways take into account all signals: signs, road type, and vehicle restrictions.

  5. Question 5: What is your maximum allowed speed here?

Correct answer: Correct value: 50 KM/H

There are several factors: you are driving on a motorway, with a trailer, and a matrix sign shows 50 km/h. Matrix signs take precedence over other rules, so 50 km/h. 🚧🚦

  6. Question 6: What is your maximum allowed speed here?

Correct answer: Correct value: 100 KM/H

A bike carrier is not a trailer. On a road with a green stripe, 100 km/h applies. You can therefore drive 100 km/h without speed limitation through the bike carrier. 🚀

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to questions that often come up on this subject.

How fast may you drive with a trailer on the motorway?

With a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3,500 kg, at most 90 km/h, even where a sign permits 100 or 130 for a car without a trailer. With a heavier trailer the maximum is 80. Always obey a lower applicable limit, such as 70 on a matrix sign.

How fast may you drive with a trailer outside a built-up area?

On an ordinary road outside a built-up area 80 km/h, the same as without a trailer. Only on the autoweg and the motorway is 90 km/h your limit.

Does the 90 km/h limit also apply with a bike carrier?

No. A cycle carrier is not a trailer and therefore has no separate statutory trailer limit of 90 km/h. Follow the applicable road limit and the carrier and car instructions; the load and conditions may require a lower safe speed.
