Sign J8 warns of a hazardous crossroads where priority is not obvious. There is no priority sign and no shark teeth, so the default rule applies: traffic from the right has priority.
What to do at sign J8
Ease off and look right early. The sign is there precisely because the junction is hard to read, often because of a building, a hedge or a bend just before it.
Assume traffic from the right has priority unless signs or markings say otherwise.
Why the sign is there
At most junctions priority is set by signs or shark teeth. Where it is not, and the junction is also hard to see across, J8 warns you in advance.
The sign does not assign priority itself. It only tells you that you have to work out who goes first.
How to recognise the sign
J8 is triangular with a red border and shows a cross. Triangular with a red border always means a warning in the RVV.
A yellow diamond at that same junction would be B1, and then you would have priority.
J8 on the CBR theory exam
This sign nearly always appears in a priority question. The trap is assuming the sign gives you priority. It does not: it only warns, and the right-before-left rule still applies.
Difference from B3, priority crossroads
B3 is a yellow diamond and says you have priority at the junction ahead. J8 is a red triangle and gives you no priority, it only warns that priority is unregulated.
