G3 identifies a motor road. Access is restricted to drivers of motor vehicles permitted and able to travel at least 50 km/h. The car on the blue sign identifies the road type, rather than simply a general route for cars.

What to do at this sign

A motor road may have a different layout from a motorway. Assess lanes, junctions and possible oncoming traffic instead of assuming motorway design. Special rules apply to motor roads, including restrictions on turning around, reversing and stopping.

Example on the road

G3 appears on a road with one lane in each direction. It does not turn the road into a divided motorway. Keep to your lane, assess visibility around bends and observe any separate overtaking prohibition.

Other conditions to check

The general maximum for an ordinary car on a motor road is 100 km/h. A lower posted limit or a lower legal limit for your vehicle still applies. The 50 km/h access threshold does not mean that you must maintain 50 in a traffic queue.

How to recognise the sign

Read the image, arrows and any text on sign G3; they distinguish this version within the road type designation category.

Difference from G1 — Motorway

G1 uses the motorway symbol. G3 uses a car symbol and has a different access threshold. They identify different road types.

Expressway belongs to the Road type designation category. In the CBR theory exam a traffic sign is almost never asked on its own: you are shown a situation and have to know what you may or must do in it.
