Optional cycle path: cycling allowed, using the carriageway is also allowed.

G13 identifies an optional cycle path. The blue rectangular sign bearing “fietspad” differs from the round compulsory cycle-path sign. Cyclists may use this path. Light mopeds with a combustion engine may use it only with that engine switched off.

What to do at this sign

As a cyclist, choose a permitted and safe route. Optional does not mean every powered vehicle may use the path. Vehicle-category rules remain important even if the path is wide or lightly used.

Example on the road

A cyclist sees G13 beside an ordinary carriageway. The sign does not compel the cyclist to leave the carriageway. A light-moped rider with a petrol engine cannot make the same choice with the engine running: a separate engine restriction applies.

Other conditions to check

Check how the path joins side roads and junctions. Its sign does not automatically give users priority and says nothing about traffic levels or surface quality. The corresponding G14 sign ends the designation of this optional path.

How to recognise the sign

Read the image, arrows and any text on sign G13; they distinguish this version within the road type designation category.

Difference from G11 — Mandatory cycle path

G11 is circular and requires cyclists to use the cycle path. G13 is rectangular and identifies an optional cycle path.
