How to book your CBR car theory exam via Mijn CBR (step-by-step guide in English)

You passed hours of studying, and now you want to lock in a date. Good news: you can book the Dutch car theory exam yourself in about 10 minutes via Mijn CBR, and you can even switch the website to English. This guide walks you through every step, shows what it costs (including the English exam version), explains what to do if you have no DigiD, and covers the most common problems and the rules for rescheduling.

What you need before you book

1. A DigiD. This is the Dutch digital ID you use to log in to government websites. No DigiD? You can still book, see the section "Booking without DigiD" below. If you have a BSN (citizen service number), you can request a DigiD at digid.nl/en, which makes everything much easier.
2. The right age. For the car theory exam you must be at least 16 years old. You can already book from 20 weeks before your 16th birthday.
3. A way to pay online. You pay immediately at the end of the booking.
4. Your language choice. The car theory exam is available in English for a small surcharge. You can also book extra time or an exam with an interpreter.

Book your theory exam via Mijn CBR in 10 steps

1. Log in to Mijn CBR. Go to mijn.cbr.nl and log in with your DigiD.
2. Tip for English speakers: after logging in, tap the menu button (☰) in the top right corner and click English. The whole Mijn CBR environment switches to English.
3. Click "Make or change a booking for a test" (in Dutch: Examen reserveren of wijzigen).
4. Choose the vehicle. Pick the car (category B). CBR calls the standard car theory exam BTH.
5. Choose the theory exam type. This is where you pick the regular Dutch exam or the English version (surcharge of €6.50). Exams with extra time or individual supervision are also chosen here.
6. Choose a location, date and time. Evening exams (from 18:00) and weekend exams cost €6.25 extra. Saturday slots are popular and fill up fast.
7. Check your reservation and click Continue (Ga verder).
8. Check your personal details. The booking confirmation will be sent to the email address shown here, so make sure it is correct.
9. Read the terms and tick the box to agree. Important: after you pay, you cannot cancel the exam anymore. You can only reschedule it (a maximum of 3 times).
10. Pay online to finish the booking. You will receive a confirmation by email.

What does the car theory exam cost?

Example: the car theory exam in English on a Saturday costs €50.50 + €6.50 + €6.25 = €63.25. Prices can change, so always check the current prices on the CBR tariff page.

Booking without DigiD

No DigiD? You can still book the theory exam yourself with a form:

1. Fill in the theory exam application form and send it to CBR. Read the instructions on the form carefully.
2. After sending your application, you receive a payment request from CBR. Pay it.
3. Once your payment is received, CBR schedules your exam. You get an invitation by email, at the latest 3 weeks before the exam date.

Note: if you book via the application form, you cannot reschedule the exam yourself online. You have to contact CBR customer service for that. So if you can get a DigiD, that route is much more flexible.

Can't book? The most common causes

Your driving school is authorized to book for you

If you gave your driving school (opleider) an authorization (machtiging), you cannot book the theory exam yourself. Your school books it for you. Check whether an authorization is active:

1. Log in to Mijn CBR.
2. Click Lopende zaken (Current cases).
3. Click Machtigingen (Authorizations).
4. Under active authorizations you see any open authorization.

Want to book yourself after all? Click Machtiging intrekken (revoke authorization). This only works if your school has not booked an exam for you yet. Can't revoke it? Then your school already booked an exam, so contact your school.

You don't see the car category

1. Too young. You can do the car theory exam from age 16 (moped from 15.5, motorcycle from 17). The category appears automatically from 20 weeks before you reach the minimum age.
2. Special date of birth on your ID. Is your date of birth registered as something like 00-00-(year)? Then you can only book from 1 January of the year after you reach the minimum age.
3. Wrong DigiD. After logging in you see "Welkom" with a first name. Is that someone else's name? Log out and log in with your own DigiD.
4. Your driving licence was declared invalid. In that case book via a driving school or use the application form mentioned above.

You want to book a retake

You can only book a new exam once the result of your previous exam is registered. As soon as you receive the result form by email, you can book again.

You get an error during booking

Try again a bit later or in a different browser. Still stuck after checking everything above? Contact CBR customer service.

Rescheduling your theory exam

Booked via Mijn CBR? Then rescheduling is easy, but there are rules:

1. You can reschedule the theory exam a maximum of 3 times.
2. Until 7 days before your exam you can move it to an earlier or later moment. Example: your exam is on 9 June at 15:00. You can reschedule it to a later date until 1 June, 15:00.
3. Within 7 days before your exam you can only move it to an earlier moment (starting from 1 day later than today), and only if there is space.

This is how you reschedule in Mijn CBR:

1. Log in to Mijn CBR.
2. Click Lopende zaken (on your phone: first tap the menu button in the top right).
3. Under Mijn reserveringen (My reservations), pick the exam and click Wijzigen (Change). Here you also see how many times you can still reschedule.
4. Choose where you want to take the exam, then from which date. No slots visible? Click Zoek later (Search later) to see the next 2 weeks.
5. Pick the new date and time, compare the old and new reservation, and click Ja, ga verder (Yes, continue).
6. Click Afronden en betalen (Finish and pay), then Akkoord (Agree) in the cart. Is there a surcharge to pay? Then you get the payment screen. Free change? You go back to the homepage. You receive a confirmation email.

Costs of rescheduling: it is free, unless you move to an evening or weekend slot (then you pay the surcharge). Moving from an evening or weekend slot to a cheaper one? CBR refunds the surcharge within 2 weeks after the exam date, to the account you paid with. Moving your exam to the next calendar year? Then you pay the difference between this year's and next year's price.

Booked via your driving school? You cannot reschedule it yourself, contact your school. Booked via the application form (no DigiD)? Contact CBR customer service. Booked an interpreter? Also tell the interpreter service you rescheduled.

Good to know

1. You can only have 1 reservation per exam type at a time.
2. The car theory exam is available in English, with extra time, or with an interpreter. The motorcycle theory exam is not available in English (an interpreter is possible).
3. Saturday exams exist at some locations. They carry a surcharge and fill up quickly.
4. Your booking confirmation and your exam result both arrive by email.
